Harvey AAPI Community Relief Fund
On August 29, 2017, TX State Rep. Gene Wu said, “This may be the worst of times. But this is the best of humanity.” As a community of immigrants and children of immigrants, it is in our roots to band together and help each other out in the face of disaster.
Here’s how you can help:
Donate now. OCA–Greater Houston and our community partners have established the Harvey AAPI Community Relief Fund that will work in conjunction with the Harvey Community Relief Fund that was founded by other trusted organizations in Houston to pool resources and coordinate their distribution. We want to make sure that the AAPI community is represented and adequately served in efforts to recover and rebuild, and that aid is distributed efficiently and equitably to all underserved populations of Houston. Harvey is a disaster of historic proportions and is not something that is short-term. We are looking at a 4 month minimum time period where people will need shelter and assistance and years of work to help communities rebuild over the long term.
Spread the word. Please distribute the Harvey AAPI Community Relief Fund information widely. AAPIs live in pockets around the Houston metropolitan area, many located in flood zones. There is need for multilingual volunteers/staff for our populations who are limited English proficient to assist with FEMA, medical, legal or housing needs and resources that may not be found in regular food banks (i.e. food such as rice and soy sauce).
Volunteer time and donate supplies.
