Preparing for a full count in 2020:
Once every 20 years, there is an overlap of the Census and the Presidential Election. 2020 is one of those years, and the AAPI community will face challenges in ensuring they are counted and represented not only in the Presidential elections but also in the 2020 Census. Due to the unusual overlap of the census and a Presidential election, it is imperative that we focus now to help Get-Out-The-Count for the 2020 Census and make sure communities are prepared for the Presidential election year.
This year's Empowering Advocates training is Friday & Saturday and we encourage community partners to sign up to be a Census Ambassador and get your OCA Census Partners Supply Box.
Friday will focus on training a smaller group of organizers to brush-up on voter registration, volunteer recruitment, and tactics on mobilizing and getting out the AAPI vote.
Saturday will focus on recruitment and training of community organizers, leaders, and volunteers and cover messaging and mobilization around the 2020 Census.
· Introduction to Census and Lessons Learned from 2010
· Become an expert and learn how to answer frequently asked questions and scenarios faced by our community
· How to effectively recruit volunteers and train future leaders
· How to talk about census & its impact
· Breakouts to share best practices & strategies for ethnic-specific working groups as we develop a regional outreach plan
Through this training, participants will learn about national and regional voting trends, engage in interactive workshops, and contribute in local planning sessions. They will also receive the nuts and bolts of running an effective voter mobilization program and how to incorporate civic participation into an organization’s existing programs and structure. Components of the training include the development of voter registration, education and outreach plans, voter mobilization, incorporating strong communications components, rules and regulations for 501(c)3 organizations, how to design and conduct evaluations and learn how measure programs and its impact.
If you’re wondering how to get involved as a college student or community member without an OCA chapter to be part of, we highly encourage you to attend this track! The Empowering Organizers Track is free to attend, RSVP here.
