OCA-GH TEA Talks - "Racial Slurs: Slants/FOB: What's In A Name?"

  • Wed, November 08, 2017
  • 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
  • The Montrose Center, 401 Branard Street, Room 114, Houston, TX 77006

Please join OCA-Greater Houston, friends, family, and community partners on 11/15 at 7pm for Part IV of our "Bridge" series as we introduce the recent U.S. Supreme Court case ruling in favor of the Asian American & Pacific Islander band "The Slants" to continue using and trademarking their name against the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Implications of the ruling subsequently affected how sports teams could essentially continue using racial slurs of Indigenous populations for their nicknames. We hope to open dialogue of this issue that continues to affect both the AAPI and Indigenous populations, share our individual experiences on the topic, and discuss advocacy and civic engagement actions to take in ensuring a more inclusive future.

The intent of TEA Talks is to discuss current and ongoing issues/topics that the AAPI community face and promote discussion that drive towards possible solutions to those issues. We want to make this as engaging as possible so we plan to format these Talks with interactive activities such as ice breakers, small group discussions, and socials!

Follow us on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) to keep up with all the action with #TEATalks!

Hope to see you there!
